The boy’s body lay like a puppet with broken strings, on a pile of knocked-down cardboard boxes.

“What have you done now, you fool?” Victory demanded in her clumsy counterpart’s ear.

Victor lifted his spoils aloft. “I have the key to the house.”

“He’s only a boy.”

“It was the only way.”

“It was the easy way. You took the easy way, Victor. I don’t condone this. Thomas certainly does not condone this. There was no instruction for this, no plan. We’ve never done anything like this.”

“Thomas has never been involved the way he is this time,” Victor protested, seemingly speaking to great shadows cast against the cold walls. “I had to find a foolproof way to get inside the house.”

“You’ve proved your foolishness, but at least you’ve found a way,” Victory said, but the limp body of an innocent child obviously displeased her. “What will you do with him?”

“I haven’t decided.” Victor squatted next to the cardboard mattress, clasping his hands between his knees as he studied the boy’s face. They shared commonalities, he and this boy. They loved the stories. They believed. They would sacrifice their own safety in the interest of a greater need.

Victor spoke over his shoulder. “It looks bad for me, doesn’t it?”

“You must be the only one who looks bad. It must be on you.”

“Yes, I know.”
